'Things have been really tough lately': Calgary candy store makes plea to community for support

by Peter Eki

A beloved Calgary candy shop is calling on the community for support as it fights to stay open.

If you’ve ever strolled through Kensington, chances are you’ve spotted Gummi Boutique — a bright, cheerful, queer and trans-owned shop known for its fun mix of candy, ice cream, and soda.

Open since 2011, the store is now facing serious cash flow issues, which has made it hard to restock — leaving shelves looking a little bare.

“We won’t sugar-coat it — things have been really tough,” the shop shared on Instagram. “We’re doing everything we can to stay open and bring back the sweet experience you love.”

Owner Cael says they’ve tried everything — from new cotton candy experiences and freeze-dried treat boxes to event bookings, vendor partnerships, and grant applications. But with no inventory, it’s tough to keep the business going.

💔 “We’ve run out of cash to restock, and we honestly don’t know what else to do,” they said in a heartfelt post.

Thankfully, the community has already stepped up — about 70 orders came in after the post, helping fund a much-needed restock.

🎁 Want to help? You can place an order on Gummi Boutique’s website or stop by the Kensington store and show some love in person.
