Canadian family stranded on island off Turks and Caicos after boat crash

π Stranded & Heartbroken: Toronto Family Loses Everything After Boat Sinks Off Turks and Caicos ππ
A Toronto family is reaching out for help after their dream life at sea turned into a nightmare — leaving them stranded with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
Krista, Tony, and their young daughter Adelaide had been living full-time on their sailboat for the past two years, journeying from Lake Ontario to the Bahamas. But on a recent leg of their journey, their boat struck a reef near Plana Cays, a remote island off the coast of Turks and Caicos, and began to sink.
“Within seconds, they were in the emergency dinghy,” said Krista’s sister, Tiffany Scholl, who created a GoFundMe campaign to help them. “They watched their home sink into the ocean as they were lifted into a rescue helicopter hours later.”
π Rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard
After deploying their life raft and clinging to their sailboat, the family was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard and taken to Inagua, a small island in the Bahamas. They are now staying at a Coast Guard base, trying to recover from the trauma and make their way back to Canada.
“We were immediately in touch with the consulate,” Krista shared in an email. “The process is now underway to replace our documents so we can return home.”
β€οΈ A Call for Help
Tiffany says her sister’s family lost everything — their home, belongings, and essential documents.
“They have nothing but the clothes on their backs,” she wrote in the GoFundMe. “Please help them rebuild their lives. They’re the most deserving and amazing people I know.”
The fundraiser originally set a goal of $18,000, which has since been raised to $24,000. As of July 7, it had collected more than $21,000 from generous supporters.
π¨π¦ Support From Near and Far
Global Affairs Canada confirmed it is aware of the incident and is providing consular assistance. Meanwhile, Krista says they’ve been overwhelmed by kindness from the Bahamas authorities and locals, who have treated them like family during this incredibly difficult time.
“We will be forever grateful to this country, its people, and the USCG,” she said.
π Oceans Apart, But Not Alone
This isn’t the first time Canadians abroad have faced tragedy in the Caribbean. From shark attacks to drownings, GoFundMe has become a lifeline for families caught in unthinkable situations far from home.
This time, it's about helping a young family get back on their feet after losing everything in a matter of moments.
If you’d like to donate or share their story, you can find their GoFundMe by searching “Help Krista, Tony & Adelaide Restart After Boat Sinking” on the GoFundMe website.
