Justin Trudeau Resigns as Prime Minister and Liberal Leader Canada is entering a new political chapter as Justin Trudeau announces his resignation as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party. “Last night, I shared this decision with my kids,” Trudeau said during a press conference in Ottawa. He will step down once the Liberal Party selects a new leader through a nationwide process. What’s Next? Governor General Mary Simon has approved Trudeau's request to prorogue the House of Commons until March 24. Meanwhile, the Liberals will fast-track their leadership search. “This country deserves a real choice in the next election,” Trudeau stated, emphasizing his focus on the nation over internal party conflicts. Freeland’s Exit Sparks Change Trudeau’s decision follows Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland’s resignation in December after being asked to leave her finance minister role. “The only honest and viable path is to resign,” Freeland wrote.

Mounting Pressure Trudeau faced growing calls to step down from leaders like Conservative Pierre Poilievre and NDP’s Jagmeet Singh. Both opposition leaders criticized the Liberals, with Singh urging voters to back the NDP and Poilievre condemning Liberal policies. Standing outside Rideau Cottage, Trudeau reflected on a decade in power while signaling the need for renewal.
